RamY al-Jamarat
The ritual stoning of the pillars at Jamarat Bridge, commemorating Prophet Ibrahim's rejection of Shaytan.
About RamY al-Jamarat
RamY al-Jamarat is the ritual stoning of the three pillars at Mina during the days of Hajj. It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim (AS)'s rejection of Shaytan when he appeared to him at three locations while on his way to sacrifice his son. The stoning takes place on the 10th, 11th, 12th, and optionally the 13th of Dhul Hijjah.
Important Timing
Stoning on the 10th must be done between Fajr and sunset. On the 11th-13th, stoning must be done after Dhuhr until sunset. Do not stone at night.
Location
Jamarat Bridge (Jamarat Complex)
Mina, Makkah 21332, Saudi Arabia
The Jamarat Bridge is a multi-level pedestrian bridge in Mina where pilgrims stone the three pillars representing Shaytan.
The Three Pillars:
- • Jamrat al-Sughra (Small Pillar) - Closest to Masjid al-Khayf
- • Jamrat al-Wusta (Middle Pillar)
- • Jamrat al-Aqabah (Big Pillar) - Closest to Makkah
Step-by-Step Instructions
Collect Pebbles (10th Dhul Hijjah)
Collect 7 small pebbles for the 10th (only Jamrat al-Aqabah), then 21 pebbles for each of the remaining days (7 for each of the 3 pillars). Total: 49 or 70 pebbles.
Pebble Size
Use small pebbles, slightly larger than a chickpea but smaller than a bean. Do not use large stones, shoes, or other objects.
Where to Collect
You may collect pebbles from Muzdalifah (Sunnah), Mina, or anywhere along the way. They need not be from a specific place.
Stone Jamrat al-Aqabah (10th Dhul Hijjah)
On the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, after Muzdalifah, proceed to Mina and stone only the largest pillar (Jamrat al-Aqabah) with 7 pebbles.
Arabic
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ
Transliteration
Bismillahi, Allahu Akbar
English Translation
In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest
Say "Allahu Akbar" with each pebble thrown. Stop the Talbiyah after the first pebble hits. This completes the major stoning.
Stone All 3 Jamarat (11th Dhul Hijjah)
On the 11th of Dhul Hijjah, after Dhuhr, stone all three pillars in order: Small (Sughra), Middle (Wusta), then Big (Aqabah). Throw 7 pebbles at each.
At Sughra (Small)
Stone 7 pebbles, then step aside facing Qiblah and make dua. This is Sunnah.
At Wusta (Middle)
Stone 7 pebbles, then step aside facing Qiblah and make dua. This is Sunnah.
At Aqabah (Big)
Stone 7 pebbles. Do NOT stop for dua here — continue walking. This is the Sunnah.
Repeat for 12th (and Optional 13th)
Repeat the same process on the 12th of Dhul Hijjah (all 3 pillars). Optional: also stone on the 13th for those who choose to stay an extra day in Mina.
Minimum: 12th
Stoning on the 10th, 11th, and 12th. Leave Mina before sunset on the 12th. This is the minimum acceptable.
Recommended: 13th
Stay in Mina for the 13th and stone all 3 pillars again. This is the more virtuous option (Afdal) mentioned in Quran 2:203.
Arabic Dua After Stoning
اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ حَجًّا مَبْرُورًا وَذَنْبًا مَغْفُورًا
Completion
After completing the stoning for the day(s) you are staying, the stoning ritual is complete. Remember to follow the sequence correctly — Small, Middle, Big — for the 11th-13th.
Key Rules to Remember:
- • Pebbles must hit the pillar or land in the basin around it
- • Say "Allahu Akbar" with each throw
- • Maintain calm and do not push or harm others
- • You may appoint someone to stone on your behalf if physically unable
