Standing at Arafah

The most essential pillar of Hajj — the Day of Arafah on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, when pilgrims stand in prayer and supplication.

About Wuquf at Arafah

Wuquf at Arafah is the most essential pillar (rukn) of Hajj. On the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, pilgrims gather on the plain of Arafah from Dhuhr until sunset, standing in prayer, repentance, and supplication. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: "Hajj is Arafah." (Tirmidhi). Without standing at Arafah, Hajj is invalid.

Critical Warning

Missing Wuquf at Arafah invalidates your entire Hajj. You must be present at Arafah between Dhuhr and sunset on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah. Plan your journey to ensure you do not miss this day.

Location

Mount Arafat (Jabal ar-Rahmah)

Arafat Plain, Makkah 21332, Saudi Arabia

Located approximately 20 km southeast of Makkah. The plain of Arafah covers an area of about 10.4 km². Look for the white pillar marking the Mount of Mercy.

Key Landmarks:

  • • Jabal ar-Rahmah (Mount of Mercy) — Where the Prophet (SAW) delivered his Farewell Sermon
  • • Masjid Namirah — The mosque where Dhuhr and Asr prayers are combined on the 9th
  • • White Pillar — Summit marker of Jabal ar-Rahmah; climbing is not required

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Travel from Mina to Arafah (Morning of 9th Dhul Hijjah)

After Fajr prayer in Mina on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah (Day of Tarwiyah), pilgrims proceed to the plain of Arafah. The journey is approximately 7 km from Mina.

Before Departing Mina

Pray Fajr in congregation. Eat a light breakfast. Carry water, umbrella, and prayer mat. Begin reciting Talbiyah loudly.

Arriving at Arafah

Arrive before Dhuhr. Settle in your designated camp or find a spot facing Qiblah. Ensure you remain within the boundaries of Arafah.

2

Dhuhr & Asr Combined Prayer (Qasr)

At Dhuhr time, listen to the sermon (khutbah) at Masjid Namirah. Then combine and shorten Dhuhr (2 rak'ahs) and Asr (2 rak'ahs) with one adhan and two iqamahs.

Timing

After the sun passes its zenith (Dhuhr time), the imam delivers a sermon, then leads the combined prayers.

Method

One adhan, one iqamah for Dhuhr (2 rakahs). Then a second iqamah for Asr (2 rakahs). No prayer between them.

If Away from Masjid

Pilgrims in tents can pray in their own congregation. Combine and shorten as instructed.

The Standing (Wuquf) — Dhuhr Until Sunset

This is the most sacred act of Hajj. Stand facing Qiblah, raising your hands in continuous supplication, repentance, and remembrance of Allah until sunset.

Key Adhkar & Duas

  • • La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah...
  • • Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina adhab-an-nar
  • • Repent sincerely: Astaghfirullah al-Adhim
  • • Send salawat upon the Prophet (SAW)
  • • Make personal duas for yourself, family, and the Ummah

Best Practices

  • • Stand rather than sit when making dua
  • • Raise hands high with palms facing upward
  • • Weep and plead — this is THE day of acceptance
  • • Make dua for deceased parents and relatives
  • • Do not fast on this day (it is Sunnah to eat)

The Best Dua of Arafah

Departure After Sunset

After the sun has completely set, pilgrims leave Arafah peacefully and proceed to Muzdalifah. Do NOT leave Arafah before sunset — doing so invalidates the Wuquf.

Departure Checklist

  • • Wait until the sun has completely set
  • • Do not pray Maghrib at Arafah — pray it at Muzdalifah
  • • Proceed calmly without pushing or rushing
  • • Continue Talbiyah during the journey to Muzdalifah

Spiritual Reflection

On this day, Allah descends to the lowest heaven and boasts to the angels about the pilgrims, saying: "Look at My servants who have come to Me disheveled and dusty." Allah forgives more people on this day than on any other.

Completion — Proceed to Muzdalifah

Your Wuquf at Arafah is now complete! This was the most important pillar of Hajj. Now proceed to Muzdalifah for Maghrib and Isha combined prayers, and collect pebbles for the stoning ritual.

Post-Arafah Reminders:

  • • Combine Maghrib (3 rak'ahs) and Isha (2 rak'ahs) at Muzdalifah
  • • Collect 49 or 70 small pebbles at Muzdalifah for the stoning ritual
  • • Sleep under the open sky at Muzdalifah — a unique spiritual experience
  • • Wake for Fajr and depart for Mina before sunrise
