Pilgrims completing Tawaf at the Kaaba — after Halq/Taqsir
Back to RitualsStep-by-Step Guide

Halq / Taqsir

Shaving or cutting hair to exit the state of Ihram after completing Umrah.

About Halq and Taqsir

Halq means completely shaving the head, while Taqsir means trimming the hair to fingertip length. Both are valid ways to exit the state of Ihram (tamattu') after completing Sa'i. This marks the completion of Umrah, and you become halal (permissible) again - free from the restrictions of Ihram.

Preference

Shaving the head (Halq) is more virtuous and is the Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). However, trimming (Taqsir) is also permissible and preferred by many scholars.

Location

Barber Area near Safa/Marwah

Safa/Marwah Exit Area, Masjid al-Haram, Mecca

Address: Exit area of the Mas'a (Sa'i walkway), near Safa and Marwah

Alternative Option:

You can also shave or trim at any location in Mecca after completing Sa'i. Many hotels and accommodations offer barber services.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Choose Halq or Taqsir

Decide whether you will shave completely (Halq) or trim to fingertip length (Taqsir). Both are valid.

Halq (Shaving) - Preferred

Completely shave all hair from the head. This is the Sunnah and is more virtuous.

Taqsir (Trimming)

Cut hair to the length of a fingertip. This is permissible and often preferred by women.

Arabic

Make the Niyyah (Intention)

Before cutting your hair, make the intention that this act is to exit Ihram after completing Umrah.

Transliteration

Nawwaytu al-halq lillah ta'ala

English Translation

I intend to shave for the sake of Allah the Most High

Complete the Hair Cutting

Proceed to cut or shave your hair. Upon completion, you have officially exited Ihram and are now halal (permissible).

Arabic

اللَّهُمَّ تَقَبَّلْ مِنِّي حَقَّ قَبُولِ

Transliteration

Allahumma taqabbal minni haqqa taqbul
