Quran with prayer beads — preparation for pilgrimage
Preparation Guide

Prepare for Your Sacred Journey

A comprehensive, step-by-step preparation guide covering everything you need before departing for Umrah or Hajj — documents, health, finances, knowledge, spiritual readiness, and practical logistics.

Documents & Permits

Essential paperwork you must arrange before travel

Valid passport with at least 6 months validity from your travel date
Nusuk permit — obtain through the official Nusuk app or your registered travel agent
Umrah or Hajj visa — check the latest Saudi regulations for your country
Flight booking confirmation (e-ticket) — keep digital and printed copies
Hotel accommodation confirmation for Makkah and Madinah
Passport-sized photographs (at least 4 copies) and photocopies of all key documents

Health & Vaccinations

Stay healthy during your pilgrimage

Mandatory meningococcal meningitis (ACWY) vaccine — certificate required for visa
Recommended: seasonal influenza vaccine, COVID-19 booster, Hepatitis A & B, and polio
Prescription medications in original packaging with doctor's note — bring enough for the entire trip plus extra
Basic first-aid kit: plasters, antiseptic cream, pain relievers, rehydration salts, and anti-diarrheal medication
Travel health insurance with coverage for medical emergencies in Saudi Arabia

Financial Preparation

Sort your finances before you travel

Budget for accommodation, food, local transport, and ziyarah tours — plan for the entire journey duration
Carry a mix of Saudi Riyals (SAR) in cash and an internationally accepted debit/credit card
Settle outstanding debts (the Prophet ﷺ advised against travelling with unresolved obligations)
Set aside money for sadaqah (charity) and gifts for family back home (zamzam water, dates, prayer mats)

Knowledge & Learning

Learn the rites before you go

Study the step-by-step rituals of Umrah (or Hajj) using PilgrimIQ's Ritual Library
Learn the Talbiyah, essential du'as, and their meanings — practice reciting them aloud
Understand the Miqat boundaries for your route — know exactly where and when to enter Ihram
Study the etiquette of visiting Masjid an-Nabawi, including how to visit the Prophet's grave
Review common mistakes pilgrims make and how to avoid them — save yourself unnecessary worry

Spiritual Preparation

Prepare your heart — the most important preparation

Renew your intention (niyyah): this journey is for Allah alone — not for status, not for show
Seek forgiveness from those you may have wronged and reconcile broken relationships before departing
Repent sincerely (tawbah) for all past sins — resolve to return from pilgrimage a changed person
Learn to be patient: crowds, heat, delays, and discomfort are part of the journey — and they are rewarded
Write a will (wasiyyah) — it is recommended for anyone undertaking a major journey
Increase in acts of worship before departure: extra prayers, fasting, Quran recitation, and dhikr — build spiritual momentum

Practical Logistics

What to pack and how to plan

Ihram garments: two white unstitched cloths for men; modest, loose clothing for women — pack a spare set
Comfortable walking sandals or flip-flops (for men in Ihram) and comfortable shoes for general wear
Unscented toiletries: soap, shampoo, moisturizer, sunscreen, and lip balm — all fragrance-free for Ihram
Prayer essentials: pocket Quran, du'a book or app, tasbih beads, and a compact prayer mat
Practical items: power bank, universal plug adapter, waist pouch for valuables, reusable water bottle, and a small backpack for day use

What to Recite When Entering Ihram

The words that begin your sacred state

Making the Intention (Niyyah)

Labbayk Allahumma 'Umrah.

I respond to Your call, O Allah, for Umrah. (For Hajj, say: "Labbayk Allahumma Hajjan." For both, say: "Labbayk Allahumma 'Umratan wa Hajjan.")

The Talbiyah

Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk. Innal-hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak.

Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am — You have no partner, here I am. Indeed, all praise, all blessings, and all sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner. (Recite the Talbiyah frequently after entering Ihram until you begin Tawaf. Men should recite it aloud; women should recite it softly to themselves.)

When to Recite the Talbiyah: Recite it repeatedly from the moment you enter Ihram until you reach the Black Stone to begin Tawaf. Recite when changing states (standing to sitting, climbing, descending), when meeting other pilgrims, after every prayer, and at every opportunity. The Prophet ﷺ said the best Hajj is that in which the Talbiyah is raised the most.

Essential Du'as Before You Travel

Du'as the Prophet ﷺ taught for departing on a journey

Du'a When Leaving Home

In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no power and no strength except with Allah. (The Prophet ﷺ said: when you say this, it is said to you: you are guided, sufficed, and protected, and Shaytan stays away.)

Du'a for Boarding a Vehicle/Plane

Subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrineen, wa inna ila rabbina lamunqaliboon.

Glory be to the One who has placed this (transport) at our service, for we could never have been able to do this (by ourselves), and indeed to our Lord we are returning. (Surah az-Zukhruf 43:13-14)

Du'a to Say Before Others Depart (When Leaving Family)

Astawdi'ukumullah alladhi la tadee'u wada'i'uh.

I entrust you to Allah, with whom nothing entrusted is ever lost. (The Prophet ﷺ used this du'a when bidding family farewell.)

Du'a Upon Arrival at Your Destination

A'udhu bi kalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq.

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created. (The Prophet ﷺ said: whoever recites this upon stopping anywhere, nothing will harm him until he departs.)
